Why Worry?

“Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles; it takes away today’s peace.”

If you find that lately you’ve been more consumed with worry- whether it’s about your family or finances or your health, maybe it’s time to re-think your thinking.

No one is immune to life’s challenges no matter who you are or how much money you have.  So how come it seems like your neighbor is always catching a break or your co-worker seems to be living the “high-life” while you’re stuck in a rut?  Could it just be a matter of perspective? Theirs, not yours.  What that means is that maybe everything isn’t going great in their lives, but they are choosing to focus on the positives instead.  There are things we all can do to help us to weather life’s storms and not just survive but thrive.

Be mindful of how you spend your time:

Maybe watching the news every evening helps you feel informed about current events, but did you ever notice how negative the news is?  Try this--take a week and stop watching.  Instead try listening to music or a book on tape or even watch a funny program.  At the end of the week (or even before because the results can be quite rapid) see if you don’t feel more upbeat and less stressed.  There is nothing wrong with not following the news as long as you aren’t in denial about what’s going on the world.  Stay informed, just be more diligent about how much time you devote to following negative stories and don’t let them overwhelm you.

Challenges are a part of life…for everyone:

Running over a nail in the road and getting a flat tire is not the end of the world even if it feels like it at the time. Nor does it mean that you deserved it or are a bad person.  Sometimes you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  It could have been someone else’s tire just as easily as it was yours, but today it was your turn.  Accepting this and moving on is important.  Let it go and instead focus on what’s going right in your life.

Focus on your gratitude:

Oftentimes it’s easier to think about all that isn’t going our way instead of focusing on our blessings.  Even if you’re having a tough day, there are still good things in your life worth noticing.  Instead of grumbling about how far away from the store you had to park, be grateful for your legs that can walk the extra distance.  Sometimes we just need to switch our focus.

Here’s a great activity to try:  when you lie down in bed tonight before you go to sleep, think of 3 good things that happened to you today and why they were good.  You might struggle to come up with 3 or you might surprise yourself and come up with a lot more.  Do this every night and you will see yourself developing “an attitude of gratitude.”
